Two months ago I nearly died in a motorcycle accident.

...it sounds so dramatic when I say it like that.

I was riding along at nearly 70 miles per hour when I hit a badger that was crossing the highway. I don't remember anything about the accident, only waking up in the ICU, my body completely numb from all the pain killers they'd given me. my arm didn't work too well and I couldn't bend my left knee due to much of the skin and muscle getting ground off..

I'm only now getting back to normal life. My bones are healing up, the road rash is mostly gone, and I can use my left arm again.

When something like that happens, your perspective tends to change. I realized that I really need to get back to drawing. I have a graphic novel I want to write, and it's not writing itself. So for the first time in almost two years, I picked up my digital tablet and started storyboarding.

I'm not sure if it's realistic for me to produce a page per week, but I hope I can maintain that pace. I'll be returning to school this fall, so my schedule may be further interrupted. In the mean time, I'll throw some of my artwork up here in this space.

Hello.

I've returned to college to finish my art degree and since I also work full time, regularly go to the gym, and like to spend at least one night per week in the company of friends, I really haven't done anything with the Forsaken. I'm not happy about that. Maybe some day I can do some more work on it, but I don't see it happening in the near future.

On the bright side, I'm back to working in physical media and I'm really, really enjoying it. I owe much to my digital painting experience, but without the physical foundation I found myself lacking in many ways. I'm happy to be painting again. It's a sort of homecoming for me.

Believe me when I say my life has changed dramatically since my last update. As a result, I haven't even touched photoshop, or even my sketchpad, since March. I want that to change. I need it to. If I ignore my need to create for long enough it's going to send me into a vicious tailspin.

The Forsaken has suffered a great deal. I want to return to it, to finish it, but I think I need to go full black and white or else I'll be working on it until the day I die. If this part sounds pretentious in any way, please forgive me... if there's anybody out there that would like to color my pencil work on the Forsaken, please link me to some sample work. I'd also be glad to provide some black/white lines for you to show me what you've got.

I'd include any info/links you'd want on the Forsaken website, and you'd get full credit for your work. What's most important is that you can keep up with me when I'm on a roll (and vice-versa). Just throwing that out there. I'd be surprised if it generates any interest.

It's been constant web-building and drawing for the last couple weeks, and finally the new website is up! Getvirtual.ca! I feel pretty fortunate to get a really cool URL...

Page 41 was posted yesterday on the site www.getvirtual.ca so go check it out if you have some time. This is the first page I've incorporated Google Sketchup into my artwork. It's super easy to put a basic layour down in sketchup and then position the camera where you want it and take a screen capture. This allows me to get my perspective perfect... no more vanishing point trick! :D

That's all I got for now. Thanks for stopping by.

Farewell wonkey comicgenesis server! The Forsaken has moved up to a bit more reliable hosting provider. Yeah, it costs money, but I'll take the Stability!

I've also completely overhauled all my html and CSS on the site, so it looks a tad different and cleaner. As long as you're using firefox... I'm so glad to have it in working condition that I'm going to be a little lazy for a while and not test it with Opera. yet.

I couldn't be happier with the domain name I snagged: www.getvirtual.ca. Drop by and check it out if you get a chance. The Forsaken is getting better with every page... by the time I hit 100 pages it might even be worth reading! :-)

Whew... these pages are taking longer and longer, but let there be no doubt: I continue to slave away on this damned story. Pop by and take a lookie if you have time. jameslong.comicgenesis.com

I'm also working on a walkthru for creating a webcomic page via photoshop. I've got it started, but I'd like to add links between the pages, or maybe throw it all together in a long jpg like you see sometimes.

On the next page I want to play around a bit and see if i can improve my coloring technique a bit. stay tuned!

Just a quick note that page 35 is hot-off-the-press and uploaded to the Forsaken website: jameslong.comicgenesis.com. For the first time in a while I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.

I haven't updated my deviant space in the better part of a year, I think...
But if anyone out there is interested, my SPEC-FI/cyberpunk web-graphic-novel The Forsaken has returned. I'm trying to update it every monday, though I missed last week. I fully intend to see the project through to completion. I probably have another eighty pages ahead of me... so two years of work, at my current pace, give or take.

Holy cow. I really need to pay more attention to this site. For those who are watching, I'm sorry I haven't put much up lately. I've been working and going to school for networking stuff... not much time left over for art but I'll try to cut back on the xbox and use that time for drawing. damned gta4.

Ugh. My webcomic is down yet again, thank you wonky Comicgenesis webserver. Well, just in case anybody's trying to get to it and can't...you're not alone. The Forsaken has been down intermittently for the last week. I give you all a very humble (and very embarrassed) apology.

When it comes back, you should be able to find it here:
jameslong.comicgenesis.com

On a side note, congratulations go out to my friend Arcnaver on his second baby (slow down, I'm still working on my first!). His latest addition was born on Sunday and they're already back home again.
A friend of mine made a really good point to me the other day. He said: you know, DA just isn't a good site to host a webcomic on...it's a site for artists, not fan readerships. And he was VERY right. So I went nuts and hooked myself up with free hosting at comicgenesis.com.

If you're interested in the Forsaken enough that it warrents a bookmark in your collection of RSS feeds, here you go: jameslong.comicgenesis.com/rss…

I'm sorry I haven't updated much lately, but the Forsaken is really taking up all my drawing time. That's a good thing! Come read!
Just wanted to let anyone/everyone know I am available to do commissioned work. Please send a note my way if you're interested; you'll see in my gallery the kind of work I do...Everything from pencil sketches to digital portraiture.

On the brighter side, the cast came off last Wednesday and I went to my first round of Physio yesterday. The therapist was optimistic and figured I'd be running again in two months or so. I am hobbling around without crutches, despite serious pain in my heel and ankle, trying to force my way through it.

King in the castle, King in the castle.

I know I'm missing some great work on this enormous site, so If you'd like me to add a link here to another Deviant graphic novel, please send me a note. I will only link to material that takes itself seriously, is substantial (more than 2 or 3 pages), and shows talent (be it writing, coloring, pencilling, inking, etc.).

Sorry that I've not contributed much in the way of the webcomic lately; i've been busying myself with lots of things like learning CSS and re-learning html... all so that I can put together a website for The Forsaken. As it turns out, the place where I'm getting it hosted doesn't really let you build your own site (I don't think). Instead I have to use a really odd, online w.y.s.i.w.y.g system.

So, there's that. To make it up to all 4 of your watchers out there, I've finished and submitted 2 new doodles.

I think i'm going to have to move to doing a pencils-only approach with the rest of the Forsaken. the inking and coloring process make it take so much time that it's just not fun anymore. I will start again on it next week and have another page up soon. The story should start making a little sense... in the meanwhile, please bear with the weird cliches (they are intentional!)

Well, it's on. Uploaded the first 12 panels of The Forsaken and spent all day yesterday working on the cover. I'm excited. My work doesn't hold a candle to the guys at the top of my watchlist, but it's almost goofy how far my linework has come in the last few months. It's like the pencils are finally working for me... Or I'm finally working for them, maybe? Like I said, my work's a far cry from the guys out there doing this for a living, but I'm having a blast with it. Maybe if I keep progressing I'll be able to catch up to some of the jaw-dropping work I've seen on DA.

Sweetjimmy's advice-

Don't ever stop drawing. EVER. I was on the lam for 10 years. I can't imagine what I could be doing had I been drawing for those 10 years. Sure, I'd sketch now and again, but I'd never challenge myself. I'd never look at artwork for the sake of reverse-engineering the lines.  Don't fall into the slump of everyday life. Keep yourself drawing, writing, playing music, whatever talent you have, no matter how modest it might be.

/me steps down from soapbox.

Okay, so here's the plan: I'm going to give everyone a teaser of the project I've been working on for the last month or so. Say, about the first 10 panels of a web-based graphic novel...

So, that's why deviations haven't been forthcomming. Hopefully all the hard work and time I've been putting into this project will show. My abilities have really grown in the last six months and I'm sure they'll continue to. Please understand that all of the tablet drawings I do are on a dell inspiron 6000... and I'm using an antique graphire (the pen tip is almost ground down to a nub). So... that's my excuse of any of the panels I put up are funny looking.

In anticipation of this major update, I've approached a few groups to join in and hopefully generate some interest in my work. I really hope everyone out there who takes a peek enjoys the viewing/reading as much as I'm enjoying putting it all together.

Break your leg sometime and then try to count the number of people that tell you "Don't break a leg!" Haha ha hahaha. Clever the first 130 times I heard it... now it's moving well past droll territory and into SIGHville. I suppose I should just shut up and try my best to let others' jovial commentary lift my spirits, whether it's a tired pun or not.

On the upside, I'm using this downtime to refresh my html knowledge and learn new stuff like xhtml, CSS, and (hopefully) javascript. I'm really looking forward to web-publishing my graphic novel, "The Foresaken." I am getting a tad ahead of myself, since the novel itself is like not even a fraction complete (even the manuscript), but I figure If I know what I'm doing on the technical end, at least I can routinely take a break from writing/drawing/coloring/etc and instead focus on webdesign. Plus, it's just good stuff to know, anyway.

So it reached a sweetjimmy record low of -53C last night in the lovely city of Winnipeg. The car was DOA this morning. Anywho, I've been in a slight funk lately... tired of drawing, or more accurately, tired of my lack of improvement over the last few months. I've gotten better in a few aspects, but I just swing back and forth between inspired and dismally bored with all creative endevors. I hate this.

I think I'll swing back into portraiture for a while. Maybe that will help. Anywho, cheerz. Happy colder-than-hell Friday.

Well, I've found something new to pour my time into: a graphic novel. Designing one, that is. You see, over the last two years, I wrote a novel and now I have this killer universe I created... I might as well exploit it a bit. Well, that's what I'm doing.

The outline for my story is done and I'm hammering away on a script while drawing out the panels. It's definitely going to take a lot of time; I can only manage to draw about two panels per day, tops. I uploaded the latest panel; a character that goes by the name of Vlad. He's a vampire pirate. And yes, there will also be ninjas and more ass-kickery than you'll know what to do with.

'Nuff said.
That is caveman for "Greetings and Salutations."

I've recently finished my second novel and I've been working constantly on both concept artwork and the submission process. As much as I love to write, I love drawing more but I'm afraid I'm better at writing. My dream is to write and illustrate a graphic novel, but my immagination, lately, has become a clean slate of nothingness.

Well. I'll wrap this up. Not sure what this function even does, really, so let's hit the button at the bottom and find out...
